Designed to carry oversized cargo for NASA during the Apollo era, the Super Guppy aircraft have had a long and successful history. These amazing planes were based off of Boeing Stratocruisers and can trace their design origins to the B-29 project.

If it originated as a B-29, could it hypothetically work as a really big B-29? Apart from being a gigantic floating target, that's lots of space for more bombs or stuff.

For some reason I always just assumed they were c-130 based. In retrospect that was a dumb assumption given the C-130's high wing configuration. Thanks for the info.

I saw the Super Guppy at an air show at Ellington Field in Houston a few years ago. Sorry, no SR20. What an amazing bird, though.

I read the other day Airbus may be considering an A330-based version of the Beluga for its higher MTOW.

Right, Airbus used the Guppy for over a decade but between the aging airframe, rising maintenance costs, size constraints, and constant jokes from Boeing, they decided to develop their own, creating the bigger Beluga in the early 90s

Too true. Saw it up close at the Paris Air Show about 15 years ago. Not much to the top structure. I always thought it was funny that Airbus had to use a plane based on a Boeing during the early years.

Payload weight would be about the same.
